An evening to remember. Last Friday, January 23rd, some of the greatest bands in Austria gathered together to tribute David Bowie, in the Thin White Duke’s 50th anniversary as a singer. Seven bands with seven different styles performed some of the most popular songs Bowie has written in an exceptional place: the grazer Club Wakuum, a cozy stage where some privileged people got to watch them perform and afterwards dance to the music the DJs Columbush, Simi Stardust and Adriana Celentana played in the afterparty.
The show started with Favela Gold, who transformed the british Bowie into an Austrian musician, interpreting the songs in German. After him was the other most innovative moment of the evening, with Heifetz, the duo who used a distorted voice to give their personal touch to Bowie’s songs.
The Sado Maso Guitar Club came to revolve the stage without making great changes to the songs, and offered a wonderful interpretation.
Jacques Bush’s beautiful warbles and the harmonious combined instruments easily won the audience.
Effi was for me the great surprise of the evening. Although I had heard of him before, I had never gotten around to listening to him before, and I have to say, he is an absolutely exquisite musician, and I can’t stop listening to his music since the show.
And, sadly, we arrived to the end of the show, but how could we finish a show without our “pet band”, Polkov! They came, they made a mess and they left us wanting more and more…
Bowie and Austrian bands, who could ask for more? It was a great opportunity to get to know and hear for the first time new bands who are getting bigger these days… and of course enjoying the marvelous music of the Goblin King!
